Zenyatta will be bred to Tapit
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss announced today that ZENYATTA, the 2010 Horse of the Year, will be sent to Tapit to be bred in 2012. “ZENYATTA’s pedigree is a great match to the A.P. Indy sire line, and in choosing Tapit, we think this will be a dynamic mating. Her first mating was to Bernardini, a son of A.P. Indy, and we are thrilled with her colt.”More » -

Zenyatta gets accustomed to her new Lane’s End home
Zenyatta hasn’t been turned out in a paddock yet at her new home, Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky., but she has been taking some walks since her arrival there on Monday night.
On Thursday, the 6-year-old Horse of the Year contender stepped out in what one observer described as “a very large paddock” with a distant view of the broodmares who will be her neighbors during her breeding career at the farm. Zenyatta was led around the paddock at a walk by a Lane’s End broodmare manager, Charles Campbell, and tugged strongly against her lead shank while performing her trademark foreleg extensions. -
Zenyatta’s California fans give her a warm send-off to Kentucky
Zenyatta heard the hearty cheers of a California racing audience for the final time at Hollywood Park on Sunday, with an enthusiastic crowd lining the paddock and the winner’s circle to bid farewell to the popular mare.
During a 40-minute ceremony, Zenyatta was paraded in the paddock for 15 minutes and spent more than 20 minutes walking on the racetrack before the grandstand and clubhouse and into the winner’s circle for a brief presentation that recognized the efforts of the people behind her. A crowd of 11,216 was in attendance at Hollywood Park, about triple the normal crowd for a fall meet Sunday.. -
Zenyatta a reminder to celebrate life
I finally understand. It took only three years, Dottie and John Shirreffs, Ann and Jerry Moss, a girl, a woman in a wheelchair, thousands of fans, and a gentle behemoth of a mare.
When I first saw Zenyatta, she was schooling in the paddock just days before the 2008 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. She’d won eight straight races, including three Grade Is, and California racing fans were already enamored of her. But when I asked those around me what Zenyatta was doing - why she walked and stretched her legs, as if pawing the ground - they didn’t know. I thought something might be physically wrong with her. Zenyatta: A legend takes her final bow
On the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 30, 1988, a sparse crowd at Churchill Downs was treated to the sight of the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and 1987 Horse of the Year in his final public appearance.
Ferdinand, by then a laid-back 5-year-old, statuesque as ever, strolled up the stretch under Janet Johnson, his lifelong exercise rider, before pausing for photos and farewells in the trackside winner’s circle. Among those greeting Ferdinand was his trainer, Charlie Whittingham.
“People were cheering and clapping,” Johnson recalled years later. “I couldn’t see very good because of the tears. The announcer talked about Ferdinand. Charlie gave him a peppermint. Then they played ‘My Old Kentucky Home.’ Charlie didn’t say much, but I did see him wipe something from his eye.”

Zenyatta retires
As the debate over 2010 Horse of the Year rages on, the debate over her legacy in the annals of the Turf can begin now that on Wednesday Jerry and Ann Moss have retired their multiple champion Zenyatta following an unprecedented career that featured a 19-race unbeaten streak and the first-ever win by a female racehorse in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). . . -

Breeders’ Cup TV ratings through the roof
The television rating of the final hour of the Saturday ESPN-TV telecast of the Breeders’ Cup this year was nearly triple that of the television rating last year, according to figures provided by ESPN on Monday.
The preliminary rating for the last hour of the broadcast, from 6:15 p.m. Eastern until 7:15, was a 3.1, up 182 percent compared to a 1.1 preliminary rating for the broadcast last year, according to ESPN spokesperson Kimberly Jessup. The last hour of the broadcast included the Breeders’ Cup Classic, in which Zenyatta attempted to run her unbeaten record to 20 wins but fell short by a head to Blame.More » -
Beyer: Valiant loss puts Zenyatta’s prowess in perspective
The nationwide television audience watching "Zenyatta: A Quest for Perfection" and the 72,739 people cheering for the mare at Churchill Downs surely felt deflated when she lost to Blame in the Breeders' Cup Classic. They shouldn't have despaired. Zenyatta was more ennobled by this defeat than by almost anything she did during the 19-race winning streak she brought into Saturday's race.
Although she regularly won races with electrifying rallies in the stretch, none was so impressive as her charge from a hopeless position with a half mile to run-dead last and 15 lengths behind the leaders-that brought her into a photo finish with Blame. More » -
Loss doesn’t diminish Zenyatta’s popularity
Zenyatta may have finished second in her final career start on Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but she remained first in the hearts of her fans here Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, literally stopping traffic on a public road adjacent to the barn area when motorists realized she was out grazing.
Zenyatta was taken out to graze at 7:45 a.m. by Frank Leal, the foreman for trainer John Shirreffs. The grassy area behind Barn 41, where Zenyatta was stabled here, abuts Longfield Avenue, with only a chain-link fence, topped by barbed wire, as a barrier. One car stopped, then another, and pretty soon, nearly two dozen were parallel parking on Longfield, as fans hurried out of their cars, camera in hands, to snap pictures on a clear, cold morning where temperatures hovered around freezing.
On the other side of the fence, more than 100 people, media and fans alike, stood in a semi-circle observing the scene. A small girl asked Leal if she could feed Zenyatta an apple, and Leal brought her over. Other fans walked up next to Zenyatta and had pictures taken. Zenyatta obliged, as always, mirroring the becalmed nature seen on a daily basis at her home base at Hollywood Park.
Shirreffs arrived just a few minutes after Zenyatta had been taken out of her stall, and confirmed that the Classic was likely the final start for Zenyatta. Though he said owners Jerry and Ann Moss had not made a final decision, Shirreffs spoke in past tense about Zenyatta’s career, and repeatedly made reference to her heading to the breeding shed next spring.More » -
The Legend of Zenyatta
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- We are driving to Costco to buy beer for a horse. Not just any beer. It has to be Guinness. The horse likes Guinness, likes it room temperature, likes it at a certain time of day. So assistant trainer Michelle Jensen and I are taking the truck to a strip mall.

Zenyatta draws post 8 for BC Classic
Zenyatta was assigned post position 8 for the greatly anticipated final start of her career, the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs. All entries and posts were drawn Tuesday afternoon at Churchill for the 14 races in the Breeders' Cup, which for the fourth straight year will be run as a two-day event, Friday and Saturday.
The 1¼-mile Classic, the last of the 14 races, will have Zenyatta as both a wagering and overwhelmingly sentimental favorite. Churchill linemaker Mike Battaglia listed the 6-year-old California-based mare as the 8-5 program favorite in a field of a dozen 3-year-olds and upward. Zenyatta, undefeated in 19 career starts for owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs, will be ridden by Mike Smith. More » -

Horse race media rank over Zenyatta
I have actually seen people rise to grapple over the called or so-called greatness of Zenyatta, one fellow grabbing another's shirt collar, the both of them falling onto a table and knocking over the hundreds of empty beer bottles, or so it seemed. It's true that the world could use a horse hero because horses don't talk back. But why argue when you can go bet? More » -

Countdown to the Cup: Where to Begin?
How does one even attempt to discuss in detail last weekend’s stakes extravaganza? And what words are left to describe the Zenyatta phenomenon that haven’t already been used?
Between the passion and energy radiating from the crowd, the cheers, the bedlam, and the kaleidoscope of colorful signs, all that was missing was an announcement following the Lady’s Secret (gr. I): “Zenyatta has left the building.”
You didn’t even have to be there. The jolt of electricity that Zenyatta and her fervid fans emitted could be felt 3,000 miles away.
Dottie Ingordo Shirreffs, wife of trainer John Shirreffs and the racing manager for owners Jerry and Ann Moss, put it as succinctly as possible: “Zenyatta truly is a gift, in more ways than I can say.”More » -
Zenyatta on the Brain
Zenyatta's legacy cannot be measured by speed figures. Her greatness cannot be defined by come-home times, pace ratings, money earned, and championships won or denied by mere mortals. Even the amazing race record she has accumulated cannot adequately describe what she means to the Sport to Kings.
When the history books are written, and all is said and done, it is the incalcuable qualities that will distinguish Zenyatta from the majority. It is the goosebumps and the smiles. It is pure emotional energy. It is charisma.
Olivia Katherine Duckworth, 3, already a racing fan and aspiring handicapper, couldn't have been more excited about Super Saturday. And who could blame her? The Jockey Club Gold Cup headlined a card of five Grade 1 races at Belmont. Preakness and Haskell winner Lookin At Lucky would make his final prep before the Breeders' Cup in the Indiana Derby. Two-year-olds would get their main two-turn tests in Southern California.
But when her Uncle walked through the door on Saturday afternoon, he was met with only one greeting.
"Zenyatta!" cried the Dutchess of Duckworth.

Beyer: Zenyatta’s fast, but doesn’t belong in racing’s pantheon
Californians have always loved their thoroughbred stars, but no horse in many years has excited them as Zenyatta has. They will roar for her at Hollywood Park on Saturday, when she makes her final appearance in her home state and tries to win her 19th consecutive race.
Zenyatta inspires fierce passions. When she defeated males in the Breeders' Cup Classic last fall, her fans hailed the performance as one of the best in the history of the event - and maybe in the history of the sport. When the mare subsequently lost the horse of the year title to Rachel Alexandra, her partisans reacted with white-hot anger. The blogosphere is regularly filled with sharp rebukes for anybody who demeans Zenyatta or even suggests that she is not one of the greatest racehorses of all time.More » -

Zenyatta Stakes reverting to old name meaning Zenyatta will not be able to win the Zenyatta stakes
The Zenyatta Stakes is back to being the Lady’s Secret Stakes for the forthcoming Oak Tree at Hollywood Park meeting.
Oak Tree executive vice president Sherwood Chillingworth said Wednesday that the $250,000 Zenyatta Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 2 will be called by its original name, the Lady’s Secret Stakes. The race was known as the Lady’s Secret Stakes until last fall when Oak Tree officials announced it would be called the Zenyatta Stakes in 2010 in honor of the 6-year-old mare’s popular win in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic against males at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting last November.
In January, owners Jerry and Ann Moss announced that Zenyatta would stay in training this year and not be bred. Until Oak Tree officials returned the race to its original name, it was possible that Zenyatta was being pointed to the Zenyatta Stakes.More » -
Zenyatta runs her perfect record to 18 in Hirsch
Zenyatta extended her historic winning streak to 18 races in Saturday’s $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar.
Zenyatta’s neck victory in the Grade 1 Hirsch, her fourth win of the year, was not her flashiest win of the season, the fastest, or against the toughest competition, but she overcame a slow pace to run down pacesetter Rinterval.
An enthusiastic crowd of 32,536, unconcerned about technical matters such as the final time or the strength of the field, roared when Zenyatta reached the front on her way to extending her winning streak.
Jockey Mike Smith never struck Zenyatta with the whip, and did not need to. But he did urge the mare with a hand-ride in deep stretch to maintain her advantage. He sensed she even loafed a bit in the final sixteenth-mile after taking the lead.
“She was geared down, and I think she thought that was enough,” Smith said. “She pretty much had it under control. They way she did run was very, very impressive. She did what she had to do to get the job done.”More » -

Zenyatta to race in 2010
Zenyatta will run in 2010.
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss told Daily Racing Form on Saturday that the undefeated 6-year-old mare will campaign this season.
"We're going to run her," Jerry Moss said Saturday at Santa Anita.
It was widely believed that the Breeders' Cup Classic was going to be her final start, and Moss thought so, too.
"I got very emotional after she won the Breeders' Cup and thought what better way to retire," Moss said.
Zenyatta, however, bounced out of the Breeders' Cup in top shape and has posted three half-mile workouts at her Hollywood Park base recently.. .
