  • The Walker campaign’s adventures on Twitter 



    I'm always interested to see how politicians use the Internet in an election year. Back in 2008, the Obama campaign was lauded for using the Internet as a big fundraising tool. Personally, I thought they were shortchanging the power of the Internet.

    I have noticed a few campaigns using Google Ad Words and now this is an example of a campaign using promoted tweets. I'd say it's a "nice" example, except that whoever wrote the tweet clearly knows nothing about Twitter. On Twitter, "#" is not acceptable shorthand for "numbers". So, what the Walker campaign is actually doing here is spending money to get the hashtag "s" trending. Um, okay. More »

  • FBI wants to scrape Twitter worldwide 

    The FBI is considering continuously monitoring all social media sites on a global basis, and is looking for help. It's asking contractors for proposals for a system that could scan the networks, globally and in real time, to identify potential threats. The deadline for responses is 10 February. According to its Request for Information, the applications must be able to "provide an automated search and scrape capability of both social media sites and open source news sites for breaking events, crisis, and threats that meet the search parameters/keywords defined by FBI SIOC"..
