If you love your Tebow, set him free
I like to listen to ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the morning on my way to work. This morning, unsurprisingly, it was Tebow Time. They read a Merril Hoge quote where Hoge suggested that the Jacksonville Jaguars’ coach demand a clause in his contract that would guarantee he wouldn’t have to “deal” with Tebow. Yeah, I mean, who wants to “deal” with a guy who led his crappy team to the playoffs, won a playoff game, sold a ton of merchandise, got his team’s fans excited and dedicated himself to the community. I mean, seriously, what a pain in the ass.I thought we loved the underdog, so I’m stunned by the vitriolic hate directed at Tebow. What has he done other than be a mediocre quarterback who still manages to win games? Oh sure, he talks about God, but so far he hasn’t been a hypocrite about it, has he? Basically, all Tebow says is “I heart God” and then he does nice things. Asshole.
So, I’m torn. On one hand, I love Tebow and I love the Packers, so a Tebow/Packers combo is an enticing package. The Packers have proven time and again that they can develop quarterbacks. Tebow couldn’t have better teachers. Aaron Rodgers is the MVP, so the Packers aren’t going to get into a “put in Tebow” quarterback controversy. And frankly, Tebow & Rodgers would probably be good for each other. They’re both pretty religious and super self-motivated, but I think Tebow could benefit from being around a more sardonic guy like Rodgers (it’ll make him seem more human and help him lighten up), while Rodgers could probably use a dose of Tebow’s earnestness. And, I think he’d actually enjoy being a mentor at this point in his career.
On the other hand, I love Tebow Time. It’s never going to be Tebow Time in Green Bay unless something catastrophic happens to Aaron Rodgers. I don’t want that! But I do want the excitement of Tim Tebow and I do want him to have the opportunity to keep proving that he belongs in the NFL. I want him to be able to stick it to the John Elways and Merril Hoges of the world. There needs to be a place for a guy like Tebow in the NFL and sadly, it’s probably not in Green Bay.More »
