One peanut butter smoothie please: Squirrel tucks into his favourite treat – but only after spending hours learning how to use a straw
A straw poll held in any back garden would suggest that when it comes to problem solving, you can’t beat a grey squirrel. And this bright and bushy-tailed customer proved it, by rapidly learning how to drink a peanut-butter smoothie from a deep glass. . . -

Squirrel’s hoard allows flower to regenerate 30,000 years later
It was an Ice Age squirrel’s treasure chamber, a burrow containing fruit and seeds that had been stuck in the Siberian permafrost for over 30,000 years. From the fruit tissues, a team of Russian scientists managed to resurrect an entire plant in a pioneering experiment that paves the way for the revival of other species. . -

Lessons for Squirrels
I've got nothing against squirrels. I don't want anybody to think that because I'm writing about squirrel-busting for a second week in a row I've got some squirrel-hating obsession. Though, to be frank, I believe the squirrels in my backyard are exercising a vendetta for reasons beyond my grasp. Here are some of my squirrel-loving bona fides: I grew up among squirrels—not in my apartment, but in Central Park. My father told us not to try to touch or feed them, warning that they delivered a nasty bite. (How he knew, I have no idea, because to the best of my knowledge the only animal that ever bit him was a monkey at the zoo, for whom he reserved special venom.) But from a distance I'm forced to admit they're a net asset, an attractive, manageable form of urban wildlife.More » -
Man Testing Whether Shooting Squirrels Is Constitutional
If squirrels are damaging your home, can you shoot them? A constitutional debate is heating up in Chesterfield. A Chesterfield man believes he has the constitutional right to shoot them, but some of his neighbors are complaining. Gene Schenberg says squirrels have caused thousands of dollars in damage to the downspouts of his home. He says he tried traps, tree trimming and poisons but then switched to a pellet gun. Schnberg says that was an effective way of keeping the animals away, but a neighbor is complaining.More » -

Squirrels are taking over the Midwest
I don’t like things that go bump in the night. I have an old house, and old houses have a lot of bumps in the night.
I will close my eyes and settle in for a nice night’s sleep when the noise starts. I will swear there are ghosts in the corner by my desk. The cracks and creeks make me look to make sure someone is not sitting there. I close my eyes again, and then I hear Sam snorting and breathing on his window seat. I open my eyes and look over to the window seat and remember Sam is no longer here with us. Maybe it is his spirit that visits every night from his new home while he is dreaming of his window seat.More » -
Ten Winter Ales Ranked
Winter may still be more than a month away, but try telling that to your local craft-beer store (unless you don’t have a local craft-beer store, in which case you have my deepest sympathy). As squirrels pack their nests with chestnuts and acorns, November is a month for stocking up on old ales, strong lagers and winter warmers for those cold days ahead.. -

Senate Vote Saves Spending for Squirrel Sanctuaries
A sanctuary for white squirrels, an antique bicycle museum and a giant roadside coffee pot are some of the projects that can still be funded with gas-tax dollars meant for highway construction after the Senate defeated a measure to strip such spending.
The amendment was offered by Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.) on Wednesday to a massive spending bill, but was tabled 59 to 39. The measure would have lifted a federal requirement that 10% of highway funding to states be used for beautification or historical projects.More » -

Cracking Down on Rally Squirrel
Most people found great amusement in the squirrel(s) who dashed onto the field at Busch Stadium during Games 3 and 4 between the Cardinals and Phillies, and it has since been called the Rally Squirrel, complete with his own Twitter page. You can count Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt among those who were not amused, nor was Busch Stadium’s management. The stadium groundskeepers have now set up squirrel traps to prevent the resident critters from causing future mayhem.More » -
Suicidal Squirrels? Or Are They Just Nuts?
You're driving down the road, minding your own business, when suddenly, a squirrel, jaws clenched around something larger than its entire head, lunges out of the underbrush and launches itself suicidally in front of your car.
If reflexes and physics keep you from squashing that squirrel flat, you can be assured that it will be only moments before the next romping Rocky ricochets out into the road, right in front of you.
So what’s going on?. . -
What Does Albert the Squirrel Have to do with 9/11?
This past Labor Day my eight-year-old son Max and I were in the back yard doing some yard work. I had recently trimmed a tree and now the task was to cut the branches into smaller pieces for recycling.
Our work was interrupted when I noticed our dog Porkchop staring something down. In the middle of the yard was a baby squirrel. I grabbed Porkchop and whisked her inside, fearing she would kill the little critter.
What happened next is nothing short of remarkable.
The baby squirrel began to follow my son around. Wherever Max would go, the squirrel would go. Then I got the squirrels attention and he started following me.
It would get as close as I would allow it. At anytime I could have picked him up. And this sounds crazy, but the little guy seemed to look right into my eyes.
I moved side to side, backward -- even walked to the side of the yard.... and here came the squirrel. He was very small, as evident by the story photo.More » -

Alaska scientists make squirrels hibernate
Scientists in Alaska said Tuesday they have figured out how to make squirrels hibernate, a process that could be used to preserve brain function in humans who suffer strokes or heart attacks.
But the technique only worked in squirrels who were awakened by researchers during their hibernation season, not outside normal hibernation times, said the study in The Journal of Neuroscience.
Researchers at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, studied arctic ground squirrels, giving them a caffeine-like substance to awaken them from hibernation.. . -
The Grassroots Story Behind Wisconsin’s 2nd Best Selling Beer
Every time we drive up to Wisconsin, our car no sooner crosses the state line than my husband pulls over into a gas station and grabs a six-pack of beer. Yes, weird. No, he’s not an alcoholic. His mission is to buy Spotted Cow, a craft beer from New Glarus Brewing Company, located in the 2,000-person town of New Glarus, Wisconsin.
Spotted Cow is a legend of a beer in the Midwest. Some even call it epic—the taste is light, citrusy, and clean, with a crisp finish. The company brews a wide variety of beers, with names like Fat Squirrel, Moon Man, and Two Women—and all multiple award winners.More » -

The white squirrels of Brevard
When we pulled up to the gate, the second thing we were asked, after our names, was, ”Are you here to see the white squirrels of Brevard?”
I’d never heard of white squirrels — or that Brevard, N.C. was renowned for being home to them — and, to make matters more confusing, for a fleeting moment I thought the woman at the campground gate had said “white girls.”
She went on to explain that the peculiar species could be found in town, mostly in residential areas, and that it was just a matter of driving around until you saw one.. -

Wry take on bygone days of squirrel taming
On the topic of pets, it might be assumed that to the question of how to keep a pet squirrel, there would be only one answer: don’t keep it at all. Creator of the little masterpiece How to Keep a Pet Squirrel, Axel Scheffler, however, disagrees – for the sake of art and amusement, at least.. -

U.S. Renews Contract With Spotted Ground Squirrels Through 2015
The Department of the Interior announced this week that ongoing negotiations with the nation's population of spotted ground squirrels have been resolved and that the rodents are now contracted to continue activities on U.S. soil through Dec. 31, 2015.
"We're happy to have finally reached an agreement with this vital American species, and we thank all the ground squirrels who have been carrying on in good faith for the past 18 months while we worked this out," a jubilant but visibly exhausted Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told reporters at a press conference Tuesday. "Their continued participation in our forests, meadows, and prairies is an integral part of our natural world, and I think our generous offer reflects that fact."More » -
Life on the bench: a squirrel’s perspective
For a recent assignment to photograph "summer in D.C.," I rode around the National Mall on a bicycle searching for images. I slung one camera around my neck, put the other with the longer zoom lens in a backpack, and started pedaling.
Park the bike, unload the second camera, and walk around. Repeat.
Some days, wonderful things happen right in front of you. You are charmed. Other days, nothing comes together in the viewfinder.More »
