FBI wants to scrape Twitter worldwide
The FBI is considering continuously monitoring all social media sites on a global basis, and is looking for help. It's asking contractors for proposals for a system that could scan the networks, globally and in real time, to identify potential threats. The deadline for responses is 10 February. According to its Request for Information, the applications must be able to "provide an automated search and scrape capability of both social media sites and open source news sites for breaking events, crisis, and threats that meet the search parameters/keywords defined by FBI SIOC".. -

Supreme Court: Warrants needed in GPS tracking
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that police must obtain a search warrant before using a GPS device to track criminal suspects. But the justices left for another day larger questions about how technology has altered a person’s expectation of privacy. New Internet Bill Uses “Protecting Children” as Ruse to Collect Personal Information
Under language approved 19 to 10 by a House committee, the firm that sells you Internet access would be required to track all of your Internet activity and save it for 18 months, along with your name, the address where you live, your bank account numbers, your credit card numbers, and IP addresses you've been assigned. Tracking the private daily behavior of everyone in order to help catch a small number of child criminals is itself the noxious practice of police states. Said an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation: "The data retention mandate in this bill would treat every Internet user like a criminal and threaten the online privacy and free speech rights of every American."
