  Preakness draw: Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom in post 11 

  Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom was assigned post 11 as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the Preakness Stakes at the post-position draw for the 136th running of the second jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.
  
  A full field of 14 3-year-olds was entered for the 1 3/16-mile Preakness, which will be televised on NBC Sports, with post time set for 6:18 p.m. Eastern.
  
  Other draws for the top Preakness contenders include Dialed In (9-2) in post 10, Mucho Macho Man (6-1) in post 9, and Shackleford (12-1) in post 5.

  Who can beat Animal Kingdom in Preakness? Kentucky Derby veterans have edge 

  Fans of Animal Kingdom will have to look elsewhere for any kind of betting value on the 2011 Preakness Stakes. The Kentucky Derby champ surely will have short odds -- DRF's Mike Watchmaker has him as a 5-2 favorite on his early Preakness line.

  Nine New Shooters Could Join Fray at Pimlico 

  Pimlico officials said on May 8 that as many as four starters from the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) could gather in Baltimore on May 21 for the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and that the interests of nine other horses who did not compete in the Derby have expressed interest in contesting the Preakness.
  
  Trainer Graham Motion informed Pimlico officials, including track president Tom Chuckas, that he is “excited” about the chances of Derby winner Animal Kingdom in the middle leg of the Triple Crown. Chuckas called Motion shortly after his appearance on NBC’s “Today” show to congratulate the Maryland-based conditioner on his Derby victory with the Team Valor International homebred and to personally invite him to the Preakness.

  Street Sense to Face New Challengers in Preakness 

  When Street Sense moves on to Pimlico Race Course for the May 19 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the Carl Nafzger-trained colt is likely to face only a few of the 19 horses he defeated in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
  
  As of Sunday morning, the only Derby starter confirmed for Pimlico was runner-up Hard Spun, who made the lead before being passed by the eventual winner in the stretch. Trainer Larry Jones said the Danzig colt would leave Churchill Downs Monday for his base at Delaware Park.
  
  Other possible starters from the Derby are Curlin (3rd), Sedgefield (5th), and Teuflesberg (17th), according to Maryland Jockey Club vice president of communications Mike Gathagan. Gathagan said the likely list of Preakness starters includes King of the Roxy, as well as Chelokee (3rd in the Florida Derby, gr. I); Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) winner Slew’s Tizzy; Sapling (gr. III) and Federico Tesio winner Xchanger; Withers Stakes runner-up C. P. West; and either Starbase (2nd in Lexington Stakes) or Derby Trail winner Flying First Class from the D. Wayne Lukas barn.More »
