Was America's football holiday always such an obligation, fraught with social panic, the fear of no invitations, of sitting alone in the darkness with the remote, silently eating bacon ranch Pringles from a can? Everybody I know is going to a Super Bowl party, including my football-ambivalent wife, who has watched exactly zero hours and zero minutes of NFL action this year. The Super Bowl is the sports world's biggest amateur day, and if you're a hard-core fan who's spent all season paying rapt attention, you will be chagrined to discover you're suddenly in a room with chattering dilettantes, asking if that guy on the screen is really named Ochocinco.
