Animal Kingdom’s Pedigree a Throwback
"The thing about a horse like this," Team Valor's Barry Irwin told the media after his Animal Kingdom won the 137th Kentucky Derby, "is he’s got a different kind of pedigree than Americans are used to.
In order for him to really be worth a lot of money, he’s got to go on and do something more than just winning the Derby. I mean the Derby’s big. It’s the biggest race there is. But breeders are very picky, skeptical people and he doesn’t have a fashionable pedigree. So he’s got to become a phenomenal racehorse in order to become worth a whole lot of money.
If he won the Triple Crown, then there’d be no question. But if he wins just the Preakness, would that make him an automatic hit as a stallion? I don’t know."More » -
Uncle Mo Scratched Out of Kentucky Derby
tewards at Churchill Downs were informed Friday, May 6, that 2010 champion colt Uncle Mo was officially scratched out of the May 7 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
The scratch came after days of speculation about the status of the son of Indian Charlie , who had been treated for a gastro-intestinal tract infection diagnosed after a third-place finish in the April 9 Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I), his first career loss.

Uncle Mo decision to come Friday morning
It has become Thoroughbred racing's version of "The Decision."
The drama over whether juvenile champion Uncle Mo will start in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday is expected to reach a conclusion Friday morning, according to owner Mike Repole.
Speaking before what has become a customary large gathering of media outside of Barn 34, Repole said Thursday morning that he, trainer Todd Pletcher, and a trio of veterinarians headed by Dr. Doug Byars would discuss Uncle Mo's progress since he was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal infection. They probably will make an announcement before betting on the Derby opens Friday at 9:30 a.m.
"I hope it's an easy decision where all four of them say let's go, or all four of them say it's a no-go," Repole said. "But we'll know tomorrow. We owe it to the racing fans, owe it to (the media), and we owe it to the public. If he's not what we deem him to be 100 percent tomorrow, he's not going to be 100 percent on Saturday."

Kentucky Derby: Mucho Macho Man’s owners do their part for Coa, sport
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There has been no more compelling story at this year’s Kentucky Derby than that of Mucho Macho Man, whose trainer Kathy Ritvo is a heart-transplant survivor and whose former rider, Eibar Coa, has made a remarkable recovery since being left temporarily paralyzed from a riding mishap at Gulfstream Park.

So Many Memorable Races, Too Many Forgettable Picks
The other night I closed my eyes and remembered that steel gray colt named Monarchos steaming down the stretch at Churchill Downs on May 5, 2001, my heart racing right alongside him, on his way to an emphatic four-and-three-quarter-length victory in the 127th running of the Kentucky Derby.. . -
Wood Memorial winner Toby’s Corner out of the Derby
Graham Motion came back to one of the three tables in the Fair Hill Country Maid Deli, and dropped into his chair after ending a phone call late Sunday morning. His son Chappy, daughter Jane and wife Anita chatted with friends about school, Pokemon, breakfast sandwich preferences, Kentucky Derby hats, the Royal Wedding, anything really.
Motion laughed lightly to himself, grabbed a french fry from the basket and said to no one, “Every time I get a call, I think it’s bad news.”
That call wasn’t bad news. The one the trainer took 40-odd hours later was.More » -

Herd dynamics of the Kentucky Derby field
Kerry Thomas is a horse whisperer of sorts, an equine psychologist. Ironically, he knows a thing or two about lions. Thomas was studying mountain lions and grizzly bears in Montana when a close call between him and his subjects led to a career change. Forget the lions and bears; Thomas decided it would be safer to study the herds of wild horses.More » -
The Voice of Excitement
Tom Durkin said that over the last decade, the anxiety of describing the Kentucky Derby’s chaos had grown debilitating. This week, after calling the Derby 13 times, 9 of them for NBC, Durkin, 60, did not renew his contract and will be replaced by Larry Collmus. The Times’s Joe Drape offers commentary on some memorable calls from Durkin and Collmus.More » -
Durkin steps down as Triple Crown announcer, citing stress
Three days before last year’s Kentucky Derby, track announcer Tom Durkin found himself on a couch in a Louisville psychiatrist’s office getting hypnotized. Though he had called the world’s most famous horse race 13 previous times – nine for NBC Sports – Durkin was feeling stressed out.
“It’s always been stressful,” said Durkin, who was prescribed Inderal, a beta blocker, to deal with the anxiety.
Looking to alleviate that stress from his life, Durkin will no longer be the voice of the Triple Crown, deciding not to seek a renewal of his contract with NBC Sports, with whom he has been affiliated for 27 years. More » -

From Uncle Mo Show to Wide-Open Kentucky Derby
So much for the talk about Uncle Mo being the next Seattle Slew or the suspicion (or hope?) that he belonged in a different stratosphere from his fellow 3-year-olds. When Uncle Mo turned for home Saturday in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, Tom Durkin, the voice of New York racing, said what many were thinking: “It is the moment of truth for Uncle Mo.”. -

Triple Crown noisemakers: the top 100
As I've explained before, this list of Triple Crown noismakers is based more on potential than accomplishment. I obviously try to focus on horses who are likely to get to the Kentucky Derby, but include some, sprinters and turf types mainly, who may be unlikely to arrive at the destination but who nevertheless could influence the journey or have some impact in later races. I start looking for promising youngsters in August and have a list of more than 200 by now. Some horses in that group aren't included here because they didn't develop, others because they were sidelined by injury, a few because they're being aimed at different objectives and a few simply because I've lost track of them.

Saturday is Derby Day: Here’s the Ultimate Mint Julep Recipe
Bourbon is the quintessential American whiskey and the drink of choice of many Southerners. Made primarily in Kentucky, mostly from corn, when properly made, filtered, and aged, Bourbon can rival the finest Cognacs in richness, depth, and complexity.
Mint is a weed. Plant some now and you'll be engulfed by it in two years. There are many types, so go to the plant store and pinch a few leaves. Pick the one you like the best. Pick two.
By the time the Kentucky Derby rolls around on the first weekend in May, mint is ready to pick, even in harsher climes, and it flourishes all summer long sporting lovely lavender flowers by midsummer.More » -

Eskendereya out of Derby
Eskendereya, the strong favorite for Saturday's 136th Kentucky Derby, was withdrawn from the race Sunday morning because of swelling in his left front leg, trainer Todd Pletcher said.
Pletcher said "hopefully, it's not career-threatening," but said it was too early to tell.
"We'll do the diagnostics when we get the swelling out of his leg," Pletcher said at a news conference at Churchill Downs.
The defection of Eskendereya makes more possible the chance of the filly Devil May Care joining Pletcher's Derby brigade. John Velazquez, the regular rider of Eskendereya, is also the regular rider of Devil May Care.. -

Quality Road out of Derby
Quality Road is out of the 135th Kentucky Derby on Saturday because of problems with a quarter crack on his right front foot.
On Monday morning, trainer Jimmy Jerkens noticed that Quality Road still had some soreness in his right front foot, which prompted him to cancel a scheduled workout at Belmont Park.
"It's devastating," said Jerkens. "I don't know that you could ever get a horse to the Derby with his credentials leading up to it.". -
Paul Soglin’s Derby Picks
For the past two weeks friends have asked who I like in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Horse trainer goes from plane crash hero to potential Derby winner
Had a teenage Michael Matz admitted he'd never been on a horse, the extraordinary circumstances that have brought him to the cusp of racing's greatest achievement -- training a Kentucky Derby winner -- might never have been set in motion.
On Saturday, the 55-year-old Matz will send out undefeated Barbaro as one of the favorites to win the 132nd Derby (gr. I), culminating a circuitous journey that began four decades earlier and launched his career as an equestrian superstar.
Between his first Olympics in 1976 and his third in 1996, in which he was the U.S. flag bearer at the closing ceremony, another twist of fate put him aboard crippled United Airlines flight 232. He and his fiancee, King Ranch heiress D.D. Alexander, were among the survivors when the plane crashed in an Iowa cornfield 17 years ago and made Matz a national hero. More » -
