New Internet Bill Uses “Protecting Children” as Ruse to Collect Personal Information
Under language approved 19 to 10 by a House committee, the firm that sells you Internet access would be required to track all of your Internet activity and save it for 18 months, along with your name, the address where you live, your bank account numbers, your credit card numbers, and IP addresses you've been assigned. Tracking the private daily behavior of everyone in order to help catch a small number of child criminals is itself the noxious practice of police states. Said an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation: "The data retention mandate in this bill would treat every Internet user like a criminal and threaten the online privacy and free speech rights of every American." Congress wants to deny you access to the research you paid for
THROUGH the National Institutes of Health, American taxpayers have long supported research directed at understanding and treating human disease. Since 2009, the results of that research have been available free of charge on the National Library of Medicine’s Web site, allowing the public (patients and physicians, students and teachers) to read about the discoveries their tax dollars paid for. But a bill introduced in the House of Representatives last month threatens to cripple this site. The Research Works Act would forbid the N.I.H. to require, as it now does, that its grantees provide copies of the papers they publish in peer-reviewed journals to the library. If the bill passes, to read the results of federally funded research, most Americans would have to buy access to individual articles at a cost of $15 or $30 apiece. In other words, taxpayers who already paid for the research would have to pay again to read the results.More » -

TSA defends confiscation of Mass. woman’s cupcake
The federal Transportation Security Administration is defending its decision to confiscate a frosted cupcake from a Massachusetts woman flying from Las Vegas. The TSA says in a blog comment posted Monday the cupcake was packed in a jar filled with icing, which is considered a gel under a policy designed to secure travelers from terrorists seeking to evade detection by using explosives made of plastics, liquids or gels. . . -

Fine proposed for botching US national anthem
An American state senator in Indiana has proposed a new law punishing anybody who changes the lyrics to The Star-Spangled Banner. Vaneta Becker wants to impose a fine of $25 (£16) on singers who dare to improvise, extemporise or undermine the United States' national anthem. Senator Becker, a Republican, is furious about parodies of The Star-Spangled Banner, including a "disrespectful" satirical version one of her constituents heard at a sporting event. "I don't think the national anthem is something we ought to be joking around with," she said. "Singing our national anthem is a sign of gratitude to those who have served our country."More »
