I don't understand why Time labels this story as "Gender". How is birth control "gender"? Is birth control not something both sexes are responsible and interested in? Are there not highly popular forms of birth control that both sexes use? What am I missing?

That was interesting, and I want to read the rest of his reviews. It will be interesting to see the view of someone who isn't influenced by the books (even though the books are far superior to the movies).

I wrote this list several years ago. If I rewrote it now, it would probably look a little bit different. There are a couple of quotes that have really stuck with me since I did the original research for this:

89. If you see 10 troubles coming down the road, you can be sure that 9 will run into the ditch before they reach you.
-Calvin Coolidge

53. In matters of principals, stand like a rock; in matters of taste, swim with the current.
-Thomas Jefferson

Those aren't just good quotes, they're good little life lessons.

I don't get the controversy around them not playing. The Grammys had plenty of room for Chris Brown to perform (twice!) and for the Foo Fighters to perform multiple times. They could certainly have spared 5 minutes for Bon Iver to play a song they deemed worthy enough to nominate for their major awards. It was an insult.

I'd rather they sit on the sidelines than look like fools like Foster The People playing a Beach Boys song instead of their own hit.

It's funny that this is such a big deal. She apparently does it in the video for the song and was just repeating the gesture. Ooooh, the finger. Who cares?

Of course, I'm probably biased because I really like her.

I knew the Giants would win for sure as soon as I saw Eli's face during the National Anthem. He was intense. It was like the Eye of the Jew from Beerfest:

I think it's more interesting that he's related to Henry Percy, the 6th Earl of Northumberland. He was the one that was engaged to Anne Boleyn but was forced to marry another woman, hated her and pretty much hated his family for making him do it. His family all rebelled against the Crown during the Pilgrimage of Grace and Henry was the only one that remained loyal. He died pretty young and gave everything to the crown rather than his family - assuming the King would later give it over to his young nephew.

The Northumberlands do have a fairly long history of rebellion so maybe Pippa should marry this guy and try to usurp the throne.

I don't know why anyone would trust them with their money at this point. I know that I certainly have no interest in participating or donating to any of their "for the cure" events anymore. There are plenty of other breast cancer charities out there.

The walking up the slide the wrong way is the perfect example. I was at a Dodgeball tourney the other week and there was a little indoor playground in the place and sure enough after about 1 minute of sliding down the lame slide the kids were climbing up the slide.

Conservatives do not think that the mixed-race man who is president can be as smart as he is supposed to be; they don't think that he can be smarter than them; they think that he is "a false-smarty pants" whose transcripts were altered to clear his way into Harvard, whose books were written by someone else, and whose eloquence leaves him as soon as he leaves the teleprompter.

Wow. Now sure, there are some racists who don't like Obama because he's black, but to say that your average Conservative doesn't believe Obama's smart because he's mixed race is just ridiculous. They don't think he's smart because he's a liberal and they're conservatives!

I also disagree with the whole basis of this article. It's the wrong dynamic. Liberals don't think conservatives are stupid, they think they're evil. Conservatives think liberals are stupid at worst, perhaps naive at best.

You don't think you've come into contact with tens of thousands of people in your lifetime? It's not hard. Go to an actual Polish community, because you've clearly never been to one.

Listen, dude, you're a whackjob. There's no widespread anti-Polish agenda at NBC. Paranoid crazies like you give us all a bad name, so please do us all a favor and keep your conspiracy theories to yourself.

Aaron,

Really.... you know "tens of thousand of Polish people"??? LOL How?

Anyway if Polish Americans you know don't make jokes about NBC-TV being the "Nazi Broadcasting Network" Its because they are not aware of NBC-TV's anti-Polish agenda.

The Polish American Guardian Society has said NBC-TV has been engaged in a decades long campaign of defamation of Polish people.

Once Polish Americans like myself found out about NBC-TV's hate campaign against Polish people, we always make jokes about NBC-TV Polish haters like Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, George Schlatter, Lourne Michaels etc being Nazi Polish-haters.

Hey they're just jokes right?? Isn't that what the Polish-Haters always tell us?

My dad is a Polish immigrant. I grew up in Chicago, where the streets are named for Poles and schools get the day off for Pulaski day. Half of my family regularly attends St. Mary of Czestochowa in Cicero. I have never in my life heard a single one of the tens of thousands of Polish-Americans that I know refer to NBC as the "Nazi Broadcasting Company," or allege that NBC has an anti-polish agenda. Never. Not once.

As a Polish-American, I have never in my life heard anyone refer to NBC as being the Nazi Broadcasting Company. Also, the examples you refer to are from comedy and satire shows. Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler are comedians. They are not the news for God's sake.

Yes, there is a long history of stupid Polish jokes, but I think you honestly are crazy to think that those jokes are any different than the long history of drunk Irish jokes or pushy Asian parents jokes or mobster Italian jokes.

No Aaron, its not insane to think NBC-TV is running a hate campaign against Polish people.

For 5 decades, just about every time the word POLISH is used on an NBC-TV show, its attacked and degraded.

A good example is what happened as recently on Nov. 5, 2011.

In early November a hero Polish pilot saved the lives of hundreds of people by miraculously landing it at Warsaw airport. There was nothing dumb or wrong with what the Polish pilot did. Quite the contrary. He was reported (in fair minded media) to be a hero pilot and very well skilled for his great difficult landing. Some people were even calling him a "Polish Sully" since what he did kind of reminded people of the miraculous landing of Captain Sully who landed miraculously a crippled plane in the Hudson River.

Evidently the Anti-Polish Bigots at NBC-TV were angry that there was a positive public story of somebody Polish in the non-anti-Polish media, so the Polish-haters at NBC-TV had their resident Anti-Polish Bigot Seth Meyers take the story of the "Polish Sully" hero Polish pilot and started to mock and ridicule the Polish pilot and Polish people as having subhuman intelligence just like the Nazi Germans used to do.

Before that Anti-Polish Bigot Seth Meyers was bashing Polish people no Dec 4, 2010 about the possibility that Christopher Columbus was Polish.

Before that, another anti-Polish Bigot Amy Poehler was bashing Poland for wanting to upgrade its military.

The list just goes on and on and on.

NBC-TV has been pushing these Nazi anti-Polish jokes for FIVE DECADES.

Its also NO ACCIDENT that the Polish Pope was always attacked as having subhuman intelligence on NBC-TV.

The Old NBC-TV Conan O'Brien show mocked the Polish pope all the time. Saturday Night Live mocked the Polish Pope too. Chris Katan mocked the Pope in Dec 1997 and its NO ACCIDENT that a picture of the Polish Pope was RIPPED UP on Saturday Night Live!!

Lourne Michaels and all the top level NBC idiots deny the Polish Pope picture was ripped up deliberately and said they "didn't know anything about it" REALLY?????

Many people familiar with Saturday Night Live and the NBC-TV regime at the time, said they thought having a picture of the Polish pope ripped up would be another nice NBC-TV "Polish joke".

The Tonight Show from 4 decades ago and George "the idiot" Schlatter's Laugh-In show were constantly attacking Polish people. The Polish American Guardian Society documented this.

Do you really think all this bashing of Polish people on NBC-TV is a coincidence?

George Schlatter was BRAGGING to the Polish American Guardian Society about how he was WELL AWARE OF HIS TV SHOW CONDITIONING the American people as seeing Polish people as having inferior intelligence.

What did the Polish people ever do to NBC-TV?

This is the reason why most Polish-Americans joke about NBC-TV as being the Nazi Broadcasting Network.

I saw this and thought it was an interesting solution - by what just Perkins - why not a bigger program like Stafford loans?

Also - the "affordability" thing seems too vague. Why not say colleges can only charge a certain % of some index or can only tie tuition increases to inflation or something?

I feel like I'm picking on this. I do think it's maybe the start of a solution, but I wish it was taken further.

Fast-forward to 2012 where the new Newt Gingrich thinks NASA should spend 10% of its budget on prize money for competitions between private companies, spurring a sort of private-enterprise space race. These private space entrepreneurs are our best hope for moon colonization, Gingrich argues, not big expensive NASA projects.

This is a good idea. I like that Newt is so gung ho about space exploration & all, but cmon, he's still Newt Gingrich.

I get the feeling that most Penn Staters are upset that their program and its coach have tumbled off their pedestal. That's what they're upset about - not the whole boy raping thing.

Wasn't McQueary covered by some whistle blowers protection?

I get the feeling that most Penn Staters think that it was wrong for the university to fire Joe Pa. I get where they're coming from - they fired JoePa, but _didn't_ fire McQueary or any of the other coaches? What they should have done is fired the entire department & cancelled the season.

I really like Rome's strategy of horse ownership - buying fillies and mares that can route/run on grass. That's what I would do. Although, I wouldn't whine about my mare not getting approved to Bernardini's book on Twitter.

I wish they knew who she was. It'd be fun to find her in pedigrees.

The other good gene for horses is the large heart gene which is carried on the X chromosome. It's speculated that a horse named Hautboy, born in 1690 was one of the first horses with the large heart gene and he got it from his mother, known only as "Royal Mare".

Honestly, it's not that I worry so much about Google knowing what I do. I worry more about Google having a database of what I can do that can be easily given to someone else. There shouldn't be a situation where the cops have a database of the "usual suspects" for something that they can go to a Google or an ISP for.

I agree. I think everyone knew he wouldn't come back, but I don't see how anyone could begrudge him this contract. It's about $100 million dollars more than what the Brewers could pay him. He gave everything he had to the Brewers and earned every penny they paid him. I hope he leaves with wonderful memories, and I wish him nothng but success in the future.

Disappointing that Harry Potter is only nominated for makeup, effects and art direction. I'll point to that when the networks and Hollywood inevitably gnash their teeth over low ratings.

On a positive note, Bret from Flight of the Conchords is up for an Oscar for best song. Yay, Bret!

I NEVER want to hear about Wisconsin fans being "classless" again. The 49er fans just BOOED during the National Anthem when Giants players were shown on screen. WTF? I'm rooting for the Giants now just based on that.

Interesting comment on the article:

This has nothing to do with slavery or compensation suppression. This has everything to do with the progress, innovation and continuity of the companies. Losing an exec, a PM, or Sr. Dev from a specific project can be detrimental to that project -- implications reaching far beyond the project itself. This is a classic "slippery slope" scenario, where, if employees are allowed to jump ship every couple years (months, even!), then the innovation and progress of those companies begin to stagnate. Period.

Allowed??? Seriously? So this person literally thinks we should be slaves? These companies have all kinds of tools to retain employees - but they instead chose to make these kinds of agreements so they wouldn't have to do anything positive to keep people.

Assholes.

People realized that he "did a lot for the university" for the last 50 years. People should realize that someone can be a great football coach and make a lot of money for the University and still do some terrible and stupid things.

People should realize that saying 'he did a lot of positive things for the University" really means "he brought in a lot of money for the University." And as kris pointed out, that's exactly the problem - they're looking the other way once again, putting $$ above everything else.

I wonder why those on TV talking about all the great things Paterno did aren't also out there defending Jerry Sandusky, who also did plenty of positive things for PSU?

I don't see why this man's death is such a big deal. He was 85 years old and he clearly wasn't the man of integrity that we all thought. Everyone mourned him 3 months ago, and now they're doing it again?

I dunno, I feel like a lot of people are being nice by not saying anything about Paterno's death. But if PSU & ESPN keep trying to make him into a fucking saint, that kindness will end real soon.

I think Lyle Lovett said it best:

You don't have to live a life of sin
You don't have to break the law and break the law again.
You can make just one mistake
And it can take you to your grave
One bad move can turn your world upside down
It's such a shame
'Cause you've been so good up to now.

And that pretty much sums it up for me. I'm sure Joe Paterno did a ton of good things in his life and had a wonderful effect on thousands of people. But he made a horrible mistake, and it will never, and should never, be forgotten.

Yeah, that's what this article is saying too. I read something else where they showed that you could only get 5 of the top 100 movies of 2011 streaming on Netflix. Amazon was much better, but you still couldn't get even most of them.

And now Ditka said "what the university did to him was wrong".

It's sad that he's passed away, but he lived 85 years basically doing whatever he wanted and ruling that school. In ruling that school he overlooked a man systematically abusing boys who are NOT going to have a happy lifetime because of that.

Okay - Matt Millen just said that he thinks Paterno "died of a broken heart". Give me a break. Don't use his death to make people feel guilty about firing him for doing nothing about boy rapes. He didn't die of a broken heart. He's was an 85-year old man that died of cancer.

Penn State's great mistake was putting football ahead of everything else and here they are doing that again.

How awful for them. It's bad enough that his dad maybe died, but then to have to deal with the media and Twitter on top of that.

We also need to get rid of the current notion that downloading is somehow akin to stealing a car. It's not. When you steal a car, you deprive another person of that car. When you make a copy of something, you haven't deprived anyone of anything. They say, "You wouldn't steal a car," but they're wrong - if I could make a copy of someone else's car, I'd do it.

High prices and restricted availability are what keep piracy alive. If you don't want people to pirate your movie, then make it easy to buy. Make it available on Netflix, or On-Demand, or Amazon videos. Don't load your DVD's down with tons of crap that no one cares about. If you're the NFL and you don't want people to illegally stream your games, then let people buy access to individual games that aren't on in their home market. Or sell a "team" season pass for a fraction of the cost of the whole Sunday Ticket package. If you're a network like Discovery that doesn't want people illegally downloading Mythbusters, then stop making cable so expensive by forcing cable companies to bundle your other 15 channels that no one cares about.

I don't know if it's so much "I am the 99%" as it is "The American Health Insurance System is totally broken"

I think it's a mistake to lump this in with the whole Occupy movement. The solution here isn't hard and vague - it's obvious and it's the public option.

Yeah, this will be a fun one for ISPs to try to implement. I wonder if the govt would be fine with letting ISPs sell the browsing history data to marketers or if that would be "wrong", yet this is all cool?

Origin of Polish jokes (Subhuman intelligence jokes about Polish people):

Origin of Polish "jokes" came from Nazi German propaganda that was then pushed by Soviet communist sympathizers in Hollywood.

The racist stereotype that Poles are intellectually inferior or have subhuman intelligence came from Nazi German propaganda and Soviet propaganda.

For example, the MYTH that Polish horses were used to attack German tanks in WWII was total Nazi German propaganda that the Nazi Germans repeated over and over until it took a life of its own using the BIG LIE technique.

The Soviet Communists saw the value of this myth and the racist notion that Polish people have subhuman intelligence, so they had their Left-Wing sympathizers in Hollywood push it using Anti-Polish Television and Movie imagery to the American people.

The image of Polish people having subhuman intelligence was useful to the Soviet Communists, since then, people would not mind too much if Poland is occupied by the Soviet Union if Poles are portrayed as having a Slavic culture that is inferior and less then human.

Nazi German hatred of Polish people:

As for the German Nazis (and even the Soviets) they then killed off the educated class of Poland first to make their racist stereotype of Poles a reality.

Polish "jokes" were in Hitler's two speeches after he invaded Poland.
Hitler ridiculed Poles in his Sept. 19, 1939 speech in Danzig (today called Gdansk) and in his Berlin speech in Oct. 6, 1939 with these hate-through-humor anti-Polish "jokes" and references.

Ironically, Left-wing Hollywood and the TV Networks (like NBC-TV) pushed these racist Polish "jokes" in the 60's and 70's even though they claimed to hate Nazis. Hollywood and NBC-TV evidently hate Nazi propaganda but not when its applied to Poles. Hollywood and Network-TV (NBC) have a deep hatred for Anti-communist, Pro-American, Pro-Catholic Poland.

The recent movie "Katyn" shows the German Nazis and Soviets killing the educated Polish class in Poland in order to make Poland "intellectually inferior" and easier to rule. This was during the time Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were collaborating with each other to destroy Poland as per their Molotov-Ribbentrop pact to destroy Poland together.

Polish jokes did not predate the 20th Century since it was introduced in America by left-wing bigots in Hollywood and TV networks like NBC-TV in the late 1960's and 1970's with anti-Polish "shows" such as "Laugh In", the “Tonight Show” and CBS-TV’s “All in the Family”.

Many Polish Americans who lived before this time have reported that they never heard these racist jokes until AFTER they were introduced by Left-Wing networks like NBC-TV in conjunction with Hollywood. NBC-TV launched Polish-bashing shows such as "Laugh In" which ridiculed Polish people constantly. In addition late night bigots were encouraged to bash Poles with "jokes" that portrayed the Polish people as having subhuman intelligence. Therefore the power of Television and motion pictures was used to demean Polish people with repetitive big lie type propaganda in the 60's and 70's.

Most of these anti-Polish hate jokes have come from NBC-TV. NBC-TV anti-Polish Bigot Seth Meyers was bashing Polish people with Nazi subhuman intelligence jokes as recently as Nov. 5, 2011.

This is part of NBC-TV's anti-Polish hate campaign, meant to condition the public to see Polish people as having subhuman intelligence.

New England & New York, making for one of the more boring Super Bowl matchups in a long time. I'd like to see SF make it, but I think the Giants are the more complete team.

It's like the author has never actually BEEN in the Skyway. There's a tremendous amount of large & open public spaces in the Skyway. Just in my little bit of it there was:

1. The TV/Comfy chair bank at the far southern end in the Cambell Midthun building
2. The courtyard next to the W/Foshay
3. The food court/courtyard in the Accenture
4. The giant courtyard in the IDS tower - the same courtyard that has tons of community events all year long

And that's just in a little tiny slice of it.
