Congress wants to deny you access to the research you paid for
THROUGH the National Institutes of Health, American taxpayers have long supported research directed at understanding and treating human disease. Since 2009, the results of that research have been available free of charge on the National Library of Medicine’s Web site, allowing the public (patients and physicians, students and teachers) to read about the discoveries their tax dollars paid for. But a bill introduced in the House of Representatives last month threatens to cripple this site. The Research Works Act would forbid the N.I.H. to require, as it now does, that its grantees provide copies of the papers they publish in peer-reviewed journals to the library. If the bill passes, to read the results of federally funded research, most Americans would have to buy access to individual articles at a cost of $15 or $30 apiece. In other words, taxpayers who already paid for the research would have to pay again to read the results.More » -

Lessons for Squirrels
I've got nothing against squirrels. I don't want anybody to think that because I'm writing about squirrel-busting for a second week in a row I've got some squirrel-hating obsession. Though, to be frank, I believe the squirrels in my backyard are exercising a vendetta for reasons beyond my grasp. Here are some of my squirrel-loving bona fides: I grew up among squirrels—not in my apartment, but in Central Park. My father told us not to try to touch or feed them, warning that they delivered a nasty bite. (How he knew, I have no idea, because to the best of my knowledge the only animal that ever bit him was a monkey at the zoo, for whom he reserved special venom.) Romney win provokes panic
Mitt Romney improved his own 2008 New Hampshire primary showing by about 20,000 votes and is the first Republican non-incumbent ever to win both the Iowa caucuses and in New Hampshire. But even though Romney exceeded 2008 Republican nominee John McCain's New Hampshire share by at least 3 points and improved on McCain's margin of victory by 12 points, Romney isn't getting credit for a great win. Democrats, liberal commentators as well as Romney's conservative detractors point to lower turnout this year than in the open contests in 2000 and 2008 as evidence that Romney is sapping the party's enthusiasm.. .
