Happy Endings on the housing crisis
In a fall full of sitcoms with marginally pleasant main sitcom characters surrounded by toxic-seeming people, ABC’s Happy Endings is a welcome exception. The characters seem close enough that when they needle each other, it’s got the rhythm of an established group rather than random nastiness that belies an inability to write affection convincingly. And it tells nice, subtle stories about race: it’s got an interracial couple as part of the group without making a big deal of it. And in last night’s episode, Brad (Damon Wayans, Jr.) enlists Max (Adam Pally) as his driver in a ploy to impress his boss, an older African-American man in a reversal of Driving Miss Daisy that was more about Brad’s insecurities about his job than race but played with race without being flip.
All of which is a long way of getting to something I thought was weird: the fact that throughout the episode, Dave keeps trying to accurately explain the housing crisis, and his friends keep treating his explanations of the role of risky mortgage-backed securities:More » -
Why You Just Got New York Times Spam
The New York Times says it didn't send a mass email erroneously telling loads of people their subscriptions were expired. But all indications are that the message originated from the paper or its approved vendor, likely as a mistake.
Many, if not all, of the Times' readers received an email around 1:15pm ET today saying "our records indicate that you recently requested to cancel your home delivery subscription." Virtually none had done so. Many do not even get home delivery service. We received several emails from readers concerned that the Times had been hacked or that there was a "phishing scam" under way.More » -

On islamic fashion
The government's fashion show did not deviate from the requirement that women cover their hair and bodies in public. The dispute is more about things like leaving coats unbuttoned and wearing boots.
Followed by television cameras, a team of judges — mostly men — circled the halls, grading the coats on their functionality, design and “Islamic-ness.”...

Sears as Lampert’s ‘Mismanaged Asset’ Loses Customers to Macy’s
When Kmart acquired Sears in 2005, Chairman Edward Lampert said the new company would have the geographic reach and scale to compete with Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
The billionaire hedge fund manager has since presided over 18 consecutive quarters of declining sales. He's on his fourth chief executive. While Sears Holdings Corp. shares soared in the first few months after the merger, they've fallen 55 percent in 2011 alone.
Sears "has been a mismanaged asset," Gregory Melich, an analyst at International Strategy & Investment, said in a Bloomberg Television interview yesterday. "A lot of traditional department stores have reinvigorated themselves through merchandising, through changing their locations; you think of Macy's. You haven't seen that from Sears."

5 social network predictions for 2012
1. Mobile social networking means good news for new social startups
In the U.S., the majority of consumers will soon have smartphones (Neilsen puts the figure at 44% today). Smartphones are about the most important thing to happen to social networking since Harvard sent its acceptance letter to Mark Zuckerberg.
Smartphones know where you are, who your friends are, who's nearby, and soon thanks to NFC, they'll know what you're buying and where. They are the key element of the next, mobile phase is social networking.
Facebook is serious about mobile social networking, but it is not the leader in this space in terms of design or technology. Smaller companies, like Path and Milk (with its first app, Oink) are coming out with new takes on mobile interaction. Square could play in this economy as well. All these services will likely use Facebook's network to put people or businesses or in touch with each other in new ways. More specialized mobile networks (really riders on top of Facebook) will appear next year.More » -
