  • Mass. budget motel fights forfeiture by feds

Russ Caswell remembers driving a bulldozer at age 11 to help clear farmland for his father to build the Motel Caswell in the 1950s.

Six decades later, the family's $57-per-night budget motel is a sought-after property, not because of the cheap accommodations, but because the federal government says it is a magnet for drug deals.

Caswell is fighting a move by the U.S. Department of Justice to take his motel under a law that allows for the forfeiture of properties connected to crimes. More »

  • Vikings scrutinize downtown Mpls. stadium site near basilica

The Minnesota Vikings are taking a closer look at a stadium site in downtown Minneapolis near the Basilica of St. Mary, a $1.03 billion proposal that so far is the least known of the team's possible new homes.

While the team insists its first choice remains Ramsey County's Arden Hills, a Vikings spokesman said the team is conducting a detailed traffic analysis of the so-called Linden Avenue site because the property's ability to house a stadium was relatively unknown. More »

  • We’re All Doing The Best We Can

I'm sometimes amazed and embarrassed by how critical I can be -- both of other people and of myself. Even though I both teach and practice the power of appreciation (as well as acceptance, compassion and more) when I find myself feeling scared, threatened or insecure (which happens more often than I'd like it to), I notice that I can be quite judgmental. • The 10 best sports-related Hitler Reactions of 2011

As we approach the end of 2011, it's time to look back at the year in sports through the eyes of a hated anti-Semitic fascist dictator, and Mein Führer, are you in for a treat! Thanks to a particularly intense scene from the epic German war film Downfall, we have been privy to Hitler's reactions to just about every big sports story of the past 12 months. Who knew the Nazi leader was so emotionally invested in the Denver Broncos quarterback depth chart? Or Red Sox baseball? Or Kentucky basketball? His sports interests may be rather varied, but his reactions seem eerily similar. More »

  • Happy Endings on the housing crisis

In a fall full of sitcoms with marginally pleasant main sitcom characters surrounded by toxic-seeming people, ABC’s Happy Endings is a welcome exception. The characters seem close enough that when they needle each other, it’s got the rhythm of an established group rather than random nastiness that belies an inability to write affection convincingly. The New York Times says it didn't send a mass email erroneously telling loads of people their subscriptions were expired. But all indications are that the message originated from the paper or its approved vendor, likely as a mistake.

Many, if not all, of the Times' readers received an email around 1:15pm ET today saying "our records indicate that you recently requested to cancel your home delivery subscription." Virtually none had done so. More »

  • Minnesota cities try to hold back on rented housing

With foreclosures still hitting the housing market hard, at least one metro city is so wary about empty houses turning into rundown rental properties that it plans to limit the number of rentals allowed on each block.

Those types of rules are already established in Minnesota college towns such as Winona and Mankato, but as metro areas seek to try them, it could lead to a battle: property owners who can't sell their vacant houses and say they could face foreclosure if they can't rent them out vs. cities that say too many rentals can drag down everybody else's property values..

  • Why Iowa Shouldn’t Vote First Anymore

A week before Iowa’s January 3 caucuses, the outcome of the Republican contest is hard to predict: Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney all stand a chance at winning. But something else already seems clear: Iowa has blown its special claim as the first state to vote in presidential contests.

Iowa’s first-to-vote-status dates to 1972, when a quirk in Democratic Party rules scheduled its caucuses ahead of the New Hampshire primary, which had opened the presidential nominating process since 1920. More »

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees broke the NFL single-season record for passing yards last night with 2:51 remaining in the fourth quarter of a 45-16 blowout over the Atlanta Falcons. With a lead that large, some Falcons players told CBS Sports that they were upset that the Saints would elect to continue to pass against them with the sole purpose of achieving the record.

“No need for that,” one Falcons player told Pete Prisco of CBS. More »

  • Vikings are the anti-Packers

The Packers have more wins and fewer birthday candles than any other team in the NFC North.

Counting their active roster and injured reserve, Green Bay has the most players 25 or younger (31), the most players 26 to 29 (26) and by far the fewest players 30 or older (six).

It's the envious king-of-the-mountain view for a defending Super Bowl champion that possesses both greatness and an unusually high level of corresponding youth. It's also the double Cheesehead whammy off the top turnbuckle that could keep the Vikings' shoulders pinned to the mat as the team tries to rebuild beyond this disastrous season..

  • Rep. Sensenbrenner Says Michelle Obama Has a ‘Big Butt.’

When a 17-term Republican congressman and former chair of the House Judiciary Committee says the First Lady has a “big butt,” there’s only one way to respond. So with apologies to Seth Myers (and Amy Poehler)…

Really, Jim Sensenbrenner? Really?! While speaking to a constituent–and one who has just expressed her admiration for Michelle Obama to you, no less–you decide it’s appropriate to slag the First Lady’s healthy eating initiative by saying she has “a big butt”? And then when it becomes clear that your impolitic remark might get you in some hot water, you repeat it loudly on the phone in an airport lounge and insist that you stand by your characterization?

  • MN gay community apologizes to Amy Koch for ruining her marriage

The gay and lesbian community of Minnesota has issued a letter of apology to recently resigned Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch for ruining the institution of marriage and causing her to stray from her husband and engage in an "inappropriate relationship."

"On behalf of all gays and lesbians living in Minnesota, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for our community's successful efforts to threaten your traditional marriage," reads the letter from John Medeiros. "We apologize that our selfish requests to marry those we love has cheapened and degraded traditional marriage so much that we caused you to stray from your own holy union for something more cheap and tawdry.".

With its legislation this week limiting our access to the drugs we use to kill one another, the European Union has just proven that if America is still a superpower, that designation must carry a prominent asterisk for how easily we're humbled these days. The EU is now blocking importation of technology into the United States that we cannot be trusted to use properly. More »
